ANNOUNCEMENTS

October 2007

After a disappointing year in 2006, the bees seem healthier in 2007 and, I think, appreciated us not taking any honey from them as they go into the winter. The experimental top-bar hive with no bottom was infected by wax moth before the package could establish itself and so is currently unoccupied. We will try again next spring.

The female workers are currently forcing out the male drones to conserve winter food supplies. Natural selection? Healthy behaviour according to the books!

June 2005

Here is a picture of a swarm that split one of our colonies in late May.

Luckily Georgia and I were there in the orchard early in the morning to see it leave the hive and, after a few minutes flying around at about 20 feet above the hive, alighting on a conveniently low bush under which it was easy to place a box and retrieve. The bee-yard now has eight working colonies including two new ones that were given homes after swarming.

March 2005

We are excited about this new venture and ask you to be patient as we iron out initial glitches. A database of products is in the planning stage and the feasability of ordering on-line is being investigated.

Meanwhile a visit was made on April 30th Dec. to the bee yard to check on swarms and the busyness of the workers. All seems well.

Paul is particularly interested in putting into practice more of the biodynamic ideas that he learned at the recent weekend “Organic Beekeeping Course” at the Pfeiffer Centre of Sunbridge College www.pfeiffercenter.org - highly reccommended.
